Ethiopia – Valentine’s Day bouquet results in criminal charges

A man’s Valentine’s Day expression of love has led to criminal charges against him in Wilkes-Barre, police said.

Police said Desalegn Tefera, 30, of Bloomsburg, delivered flowers and a love note to a woman’s 285 Plymouth Ave. home early Monday. That violated a protection from abuse restraining order Rahel Alemu, 25, had against Tefera, which prohibited any contact, police said.

Alemu wasn’t home when Tefera stopped by, and she later found the items placed on her porch, police said. The note “expressed his love and hope to be together again,” police said.

Ethiopian Joe Mamo, owns half of D.C.’s filling stations

Meet the guy who owns half of D.C.’s filling stations

Meet the guy who owns half of D.C.’s filling stations

If you buy gas at any Exxon or Shell in the District, you’re buying from Joe Mamo’s stations. To hear him tell it, Joe Mamo’s move from Ethiopia to North Dakota in 1981 was accidental.

Mamo’s father, Yenberber Mamo, was a public transit mogul who manufactured buses and ran the first fleet to provide service across Ethiopia. The operation made his father’s Mamo Kacha bus line a household name in the East African country. It provided a nice life for his family. But it rendered him distinctly unpopular with the Marxist junta that ruled Ethiopia between 1974 and 1991. The elder Mamo was jailed two or three times by the regime. Some of his property was confiscated. As his son approached draft age, the patriarch looked for ways to send him overseas.  Read on

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia has penalised retailers and suppliers in the capital who raised the prices of consumer goods such as bread by amounts higher than caps set in January, authorities said on Thursday.

The Horn of Africa nation imposed price ceilings earlier this month on 17 imported and domestic commodities including rice and sugar in an attempt to ease inflationary pressures.

Policymakers around the world are battling a surge in prices of food and other commodities.

Government officials say traders have artificially inflated prices on the back of global price hikes and Ethiopia’s recent currency devaluation.

“We are at an early stage right now and this is just the preliminary warning,” Shisema Gebreselassie, director of the Addis Ababa Trade and Industry Bureau, told Reuters.

Taking legal plant-drug khat ‘could lead to reckless and criminal behaviour’

Scientists have warned a legal plant-based drug that is popular among British students could lead to both reckless driving and criminal behaviour.
Khat is a leaf obtained from a plant native to East Africa, which has been banned across America, Canada and most of Europe but remains legal in Britain.
When chewed, it creates feelings of mild euphoria, increased energy and enhanced self-esteem. However, it also lowers inhibitions with potentially dangerous results, scientists say.

The drug is used by millions of people in Africa – about 60 per cent of the population of Somalia and 80 percent of Yemeni’s used it regularly.
It has spread as ‘ethnic communities’ have migrated around the world, including to the UK.
The main ingredients of the plant are cathinone and cathine. Both are class C drugs in the UK, but the plant khat itself is not classified and can be bought openly in shops.
Lead researcher Lorenza Colzato from Netherlands’ Leiden University, said the spread of the drug was worrying.
‘We can show that khat makes users more impulsive. It is associated with loss of self-control which may have dangerous consequences,’ she said.
The cognitive psychologist added that long-term use of khat might even lead to reckless driving and criminal behaviour.

Researchers from the universities of Leiden, Amsterdam and Granada, launched a two-month research project looking at long-term khat users living in the Netherlands, where it is also legal.
Test subjects were asked to press a button as soon as a green arrow appeared on a screen. If the colour of the arrow turned red, they were not supposed to press any button.
‘In terms of accuracy and speed of response with the green arrows, khat users performed as well as non-users, but they found it much harder to restrain themselves when the arrow turned red,’ the team reported.
Ms Colzato said the project was the first research into the effects of long-term khat use on behaviour and cognitive functions.

They will now look at khat’s effects on memory and multi-tasking skills.
Last year, psychiatrist Dr Eleni Palezido warned that khat can be a catalyst for mental health problems.
‘When you stop taking khat all the dopamine (a chemical associated with feelings of pleasure in the brain) leaves your system, so people get depressed, they can get paranoid, hear voices and it can lead to a full blown psychotic state,’ she said.

Ethiopians New Year Prayer Joke

An old Ethiopian priest was dying. He sent a message for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and President Issayas Afworki to come to His home. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room, the Priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling.

For a time, no one said anything. Both Meles and Issayas were touched and flattered that the old priest would ask them to be with him during his final moment. They were also puzzled because the priest had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them.

Finally, Meles asked, “Abba, what for did you ask the two of us to come here?”

The old priest mustered up some strength, and then said weakly, “Jesus died between two thieves, and that’s how I want to go also.”
